Vandalism and arson have taken place yet again at the Jatiya Party (JaPa) central office in the city’s Bijoynagar area. The incident occurred around 7:15pm on Friday, sparking tension and unrest in the area.
Witnesses claim that Gono Odhikar Parishad activists had gathered in a solidarity protest in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, demanding the resignation of the home adviser and other actions in response to the attack on Nurul Haque Nur – president of the organisation.
After the rally, the protestors moved toward their central office in Paltan, at which point the attack on the Jatiya Party office occurred.
The situation escalated when police arrived at the scene. To bring the crowd under control, police used water cannons and sound grenades, which further enraged the demonstrators. Eventually, the police managed to disperse the protesters and began efforts to extinguish the fire.
This was not the first such incident. On August 30 this year, a group had set fire to the Jatiya Party office around 6:30pm.
