Traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway has intensified as people return to the capital following the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, putting significant pressure on the Jamuna Bridge. Vehicles heading toward Dhaka are moving slower than usual due to the heavy flow.
In the past 24 hours, a total of 46,278 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating toll revenue of Tk3.4153 crore.
Traffic volume began increasing noticeably on Friday, with commuters waiting for hours at various points along the highway due to insufficient transport, causing significant inconvenience.
Highway police reported a sharp rise in Dhaka-bound traffic but said no major congestion had occurred.
However, vehicles lining up at petrol pumps along the highway sometimes slowed traffic movement.
Authorities at Jamuna Bridge said that from Thursday midnight to Friday midnight, 16,222 vehicles headed north toward northern Bangladesh, generating Tk1.431 crore in tolls, while 30,056 vehicles crossed toward Dhaka, bringing in Tk1.9843 crore.
Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office said the post-Eid rush has led to a noticeable increase in traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
A total of 18 toll booths, nine on each side of the bridge, are in operation, with two dedicated booths on each side for motorcycles. Toll booths are being operated around the clock to manage the heavy vehicle flow.
