Iranian authorities are preparing for a “grand” funeral ceremony for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state media reported on Friday, after repeated delays caused by the country’s war with the United States and Israel.

State television said a special headquarters has been formed to organise the funeral, while different agencies are working on preparations and logistical arrangements. The report cited Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of the Tehran Coordination Council for Islamic Propaganda.

Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades, was killed in the first wave of US-Israeli strikes that began the war on February 28.

His son and designated successor Mojtaba Khamenei was also injured in the attacks and has not appeared in public since taking office.

A commemorative event for the late leader was held in April. However, a full state funeral could not take place due to the ongoing conflict.

State TV said, quoting Mahmoudi, that various organisations are now working to ensure conditions for a “grand” ceremony once it is officially announced. It added that large public attendance is expected.

Although a ceasefire has largely held since April, a final agreement to formally end the conflict has not yet been reached.
