A suspected Indian smuggler was injured after Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel opened fire in self-defence during a patrol operation in the Barlekha border area of Moulvibazar district, officials said.
The incident took place around 8:45 pm on Saturday, according to a press release issued by the BGB.
While conducting routine patrol operations, a BGB team came across two suspected Indian smugglers, asking for an explanation as to their purpose for being there. The smugglers then attempted to attack the patrol team with sharp weapons, the press release stated.
To defend themselves and bring the situation under control, BGB members opened fire, injuring one of the smugglers. The injured individual, along with the other smuggler, fled back into Indian territory.
Necessary intelligence investigation and legal proceedings regarding the incident are ongoing, the BGB said.
The border guard force reiterated its firm commitment to preventing smuggling and maintaining law and order in border areas.
