In a high-voltage Women’s ODI World Cup clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium, India outclassed Pakistan in every department to claim an 88-run victory, their 13th consecutive win over their neighbours in women’s ODIs. This result also marked India’s second successive win in the tournament, moving them to the top of the Women’s World Cup standings, while Pakistan, still without a point after defeats to Bangladesh and India, remain at the bottom.
The tension at the toss mirrored the historic rivalry, with Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur refusing to shake hands with Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, and there was no post-match handshake either. On the field, however, the contest was entirely one-sided.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, India posted a competitive total of 247, losing their final wicket in the last over. Harleen Deol once again anchored the innings with a composed 46, following her 48 in the opening match against Sri Lanka. Early stability came from the opening pair, Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana, who added 48 runs in the first nine overs before Mandhana was trapped lbw for 23. Late fireworks came from Richa Ghosh, who scored an unbeaten 35 off 20 balls, including three fours and two sixes, while Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 32 and Rawal 31.
In reply, Pakistan were restricted to 159 in 43 overs. Sidra Ameen offered the lone resistance with a fighting 81 off 106 balls, forming a 69-run partnership with Natalia Pervaiz (33). However, once the pair were dismissed, the innings collapsed, and the rest of the batters could manage only 70 runs collectively, with eight extras.
India’s bowlers maintained disciplined control throughout. Medium-pacer Kranti Gaur was named player of the match for her figures of 3 for 20, while off-spinner Deepti Sharma also claimed three wickets for 45 runs. Sneh Rana chipped in with 2 for 38, completing a clinical bowling display. Diana Baig stood out for Pakistan with 4 for 69, becoming only the third Pakistani to take four wickets in a Women’s World Cup match.
Looking ahead, Pakistan will face Australia next on 8 October in Colombo, while India take on South Africa the following day in Visakhapatnam.
