Bangladesh came agonisingly close to lifting the SAFF Under-19 Championship title in 2025 but ultimately fell short in a dramatic penalty shootout against hosts India at Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.
India struck early in the first half through a sublime direct free-kick from Shami, which left Bangladesh goalkeeper Mahin rooted to the spot. The hosts, who had dominated the tournament from the outset, maintained their rhythm in the early stages, launching most of their attacks from the right flank where winger Rohen Singh repeatedly tormented the Bangladeshi defence with his pace and deliveries.
However, after a cagey first 20 minutes, Bangladesh began to grow into the game. Pressing higher up the pitch, they started winning second balls and launching quick counter-attacks. Their intensity paid off as they gradually matched—and occasionally surpassed—India’s tempo, though a breakthrough continued to elude them.
Mahin, meanwhile, kept Bangladesh in the match with a string of superb saves, including several crucial stops in one-on-one situations. Bangladesh, known for their prowess from set-pieces, looked dangerous from corners and free-kicks throughout the match.
Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 62nd minute when Joy Ahmed found the net from a scrappy corner routine, levelling the score at 1-1. Both sides had chances to snatch a winner in regulation time, but resolute defending and fine goalkeeping ensured the match ended on equal scoreline, and ultimately, penalties.
Bangladesh converted their first three spot-kicks confidently, and Mahin produced more heroics by saving India’s second penalty, taken by their No. 10 Arbash. But the momentum shifted when Bangladesh captain Faysal blazed their fourth attempt over the bar. Sahed then saw his decisive penalty saved by Indian goalkeeper Suraj Singh.
India held their nerve to convert their remaining penalties, clinching the shootout 4-3 and lifting the SAFF U19 Championship trophy.
It was a heartbreaking finish for Bangladesh, who showed remarkable resilience and tactical discipline against the hosts, but will take pride in their spirited performance throughout the tournament.
