For the past seven months, veteran actor and road-safety campaigner Ilias Kanchan has been waging a quiet battle with his health. What began as unexplained complications earlier this year has now been revealed as a brain tumour, his son Mirazul Moin Joy disclosed at a press conference on Wednesday.
Joy said that the family initially sought medical help in Dhaka, but as his father’s condition worsened, specialists advised moving him abroad. On April 26, Kanchan was flown to London and admitted to Harley Street Clinic, where a neurosurgeon has been overseeing his care.
After six months of treatment, doctors are preparing to start an intensive new phase lasting six weeks, followed by close monitoring. Joy noted that his father has remained strong throughout the ordeal and the family hopes the actor’s admirers will keep him in their prayers.
Known not only as one of Bangladesh’s most popular screen stars of the 1980s and 1990s but also as the face of the ‘Nirapad Sarak Chai’ (We Demand Safe Roads) movement, Kanchan’s health struggle has deeply concerned fans and well-wishers.
