BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that establishing a humanitarian corridor to Myanmar would jeopardise Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
He criticised the government’s decision as unilateral and urged that all political parties should have been consulted before moving forward.
Speaking on Monday afternoon during a public outreach event in Thakurgaon, Fakhrul explained the complexities of humanitarian operations.
“Look at Gaza — there is active conflict, and no one can enter directly. To send food and medicine, the UN must set up a route via Jordan or Egypt and then transport aid overland into Gaza,” he said.
“Humanitarian assistance is important,” he added, “but turning Bangladesh into a transit passage is a major decision. It touches on our national freedom, our sovereignty, and the future peace and stability of the entire region. The government had a responsibility to discuss this with all parties, yet they chose to act alone.”
While Fakhrul affirmed that the BNP supports genuine relief efforts, he emphasised the need for broad national consensus.
“We do not want Bangladesh to become another Gaza or to be drawn into conflict. We cannot afford disturbances on our soil, especially when we are already managing the Rohingya crisis,” he said.
