The High Court (HC) has deferred its hearing on the bail petitions filed by journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa in multiple cases lodged after the July mass uprising.

The HC bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher on Tuesday fixed 11 May for the ruling.

The hearing was scheduled for Tuesday (28 April) but rescheduled following a state petition.

Jyotirmoy Barua represented the accused, while Deputy Attorney General Ashikuzzaman Nazrul and Assistant Attorney General Md Al Amin appeared for the state.

Earlier, after hearings on 21 April, the court had set 28 April for the order. Shakil and Rupa were sent to jail on 31 August 2024, in connection with the murder of garment worker Rubel in Adabor area.

They had been detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on 21 August that year.

At the time, Shakil was serving as chief of news and Rupa as chief reporter at Ekattor TV. The channel removed them from their posts on 8 August, three days after the fall of the Awami League government.
