Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that autopsies on those killed during the recent violence in Gopalganj will be carried out if necessary, including the possibility of exhuming bodies already buried.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after inspecting the new third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the Adviser said autopsies for victims currently in Dhaka are already underway.

However, he noted that some families had already taken the bodies of those who died in Gopalganj, which has complicated the process.

“How will autopsies be conducted if the bodies have been taken by families? If necessary, autopsies can still be done by exhuming the bodies,” Jahangir explained.

The clashes broke out on 16 July following repeated attacks on a National Citizen Party (NCP) event, leading to confrontations between Awami League leaders, activists, police, and army personnel.

The violence spread across the city, leaving five people dead—four on the spot and another who later died from injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Jahangir urged the public to follow live coverage of the events to better understand the situation and dismissed speculation arising from secondhand accounts.

“Those who watched the live broadcasts will find answers to many questions. Speculation spreads easily when people are not present at the scene,” he said.

In response to concerns over alleged intelligence failures prior to the unrest, the Home Adviser said a high-powered committee had been formed to investigate the matter. “The committee will determine who is responsible,” he added.
