Bangladesh has recorded 839 new dengue cases and five deaths in 24 hours to Sunday morning, taking the country’s total caseload this year to 28,929 and death toll to 82, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the latest cases, 530 were male and 308 were female, while the five latest deaths were reported among patients aged between 26 and 50.
Regarding the distribution of 839 new cases, the highest numbers were reported in Khulna and Dhaka division (excluding the city corporations), with 159 cases each. Barishal reported 117 cases, Chattogram 100, Mymensingh 79, Rajshahi 71, Rangpur 23, and Sylhet three.
Of the five latest deaths, three were reported from Dhaka division outside the city corporations, with one death each recorded in Dhaka South City Corporation and Mymensingh division.
Since 1 January, a total of 26,896 dengue patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 1,951 patients remain currently hospitalised.
Dhaka division has recorded the highest number of dengue cases this year, followed by Barishal and Chattogram.
The breakdown of total cases across regions shows Barishal has reported 4,990 cases, Chattogram 4,589, Khulna 4,120, Dhaka South City Corporation 3,953, Dhaka division outside the city corporations 3,804, Dhaka North City Corporation 3,638, Mymensingh 1,469, Rajshahi 1,446, Rangpur 769, and Sylhet 151.
August has recorded the highest monthly number of dengue cases so far this year with 13,619 cases, followed by July with 9,206 cases. Dengue deaths have also increased in recent months, with 36 deaths recorded in July and 28 in August so far.
The latest figures come amid a sharp rise in dengue infections in August, with the total number of cases having already surpassed the corresponding figure for last year by 23 August.
