Five people were killed in two separate road accidents in Dhaka in the early hours of Sunday. Three pedestrians were killed when a truck ran over them at Azampur intersection in Uttara around 3:00am on Sunday. Md Golam Mostafa, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station, confirmed the matter.
The deceased were identified as three members of a family; Amit ,23, a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and his relatives Naimul Haque, 32, an employee at a private firm, and Javed Alam Khan, 55. The trio was standing on the roadside at Azampur intersection under Uttara East Police Station around 2:00am when the stone-laden truck from Mymensingh ran over them, said Md Golam Mostofa.
The victims were returning home after visiting a patient at a nearby hospital. Two of them died on the spot while the third was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the OC said. The bodies were kept at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The truck was seized and its driver Rakibul Islam was detained, the OC added.
In another separate accident, two youths were killed after a speeding motorcycle collided head-on with a microbus on Bijoy Sarani Link Road around 4:00am early Sunday. Kafrul Police Station OC Md Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the accident. The bike was heading towards Jahangir Gate when the microbus took a sudden turn at the intersection, he said.
Tejgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Jannatul Ferdous Badal said they rescued the injured duo after receiving a call through the national emergency helpline 999 and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared them dead.
The two were not wearing helmets during the time of the tragedy, he added.
Police have kept the damaged motorcycle and microbus at Kafrul Police Station. They are trying to identify the victims.
