The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested five members of an inter‑district robber gang while they were preparing to commit a robbery in Cumilla early Tuesday.
The arrests were made around 3am on the Cumilla–Noakhali Highway in Paduar Bazar under Sadar Dakshin Police Station.
A special DB team launched the raid after receiving intelligence that a group had gathered in Paduar Bazar to carry out a robbery. Some suspects tried to flee, but five were arrested, said Pankaj Barua, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) in Cumilla.
“They are members of an active inter‑district robber gang, and multiple cases have been filed against them at different police stations. Legal action is under way,” he added.
During interrogation, the arrestees admitted they had gathered in the area and were heading towards Paranpur Bazar on the Cumilla–Chandpur Highway to commit a robbery.
They are Zahirul Islam Pradhania alias Faruq, 53, of Chandpur Sadar Upazila; Mamun Miji, 45, of Hajiganj Upazila; Md Rabiul Alam, 35, of Chandpur Sadar Upazila; Md Kabir Bhuiyan, 40; and Md Nazrul Islam, 35, of Faridganj Upazila in Chandpur.
An iron bolt cutter, a pair of pliers, a sharp weapon, a blue pickup van and a motorcycle were seized from their possession.
Police said the suspects had long been involved in robberies in districts of the Chattogram Division, with multiple cases pending against them. Zahirul Islam alone faces five cases at different police stations in Chandpur.
