Golam Rasul has been sentenced to five days’ imprisonment for tearing a ballot paper at a polling centre in Habiganj.
He is an expatriate in the UK.
The incident occurred Thursday noon at Mostafapur Government Primary School centre in Inatganj union of Nabiganj upazila.
After the allegations were proven, a mobile court handed Rasul the sentence. The court was led by Md Rahul Amin, assistant returning officer and upazila executive officer.
Rahul Amin said Rasul is a voter from Ward 5 of Inatganj union. He entered the polling centre and raised objections about the environment inside. At one point, he tore a ballot paper, saying he would not vote. When army personnel on duty intervened, he scuffled with them.
Later, the mobile court sentenced him for disrupting the polling centre and damaging ballot papers. He has been sent to Habiganj District Jail to serve the sentence.
