Former Awami League lawmaker Saddam Hossain Pavel has been sent to jail after he was arrested in an attempt-to-murder case during the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra issued the detention order on Friday when police produced Pavel before the court.

Earlier on Thursday, Detective Police tracked down Pavel, a former MP from Nilphamari-3 constituency and a leader of Jubo League, from Lalmatia area of the capital.

Defense lawyers – Emarat Hossain Bachchu and SM Shariful Islam – filed a bail petition, but its hearing could not take place due to the absence of the necessary documents.

Later, the judge sent Pavel to jail and ordered a bail hearing upon receipt of the original documents.

According to the prosecution, the accused opened fire on a peaceful rally of students in front of Newmarket’s Gate No 2 on August 2, 2024.

Several students, including plaintiff Habibur Rahman, were injured in the firing. On August 26, an attempt-to-murder case was filed with Newmarket Police Station in the capital.
