Saddam Hossain Pavel, a Awami League-backed former lawmaker from Nilphamari-3, was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police late Thursday night from the Mohammadpur area of the capital.
Confirming the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of the DB (Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said Pavel was taken into custody around 11pm in connection with several cases related to the July Uprising.
In coordinated operations, DB personnel also arrested seven other individuals linked to the Awami League and its affiliated organisations from different locations across Dhaka.
According to law enforcement sources, the group is suspected of being involved in organising and financially supporting spontaneous processions in the city. Investigations are ongoing.
