Independence Award-winning writer, researcher, and teacher Jatin Sarker has passed away at the age of 89.
Jatin breathed his last while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital around 2:45pm on Wednesday, his son Suman Sarker told the media.
According to Communist Party of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh District Committee President Emdadul Haque Millat, Jatin had been suffering from numerous old-age complications due to his advanced age.
In June, Jatin fell and injured his thigh. He was later taken to Dhaka for treatment. Last week, he returned to Mymensingh and continued his treatment there. His body will be taken to the Mymensingh unit of Udichi for people to pay their respects.
Details regarding the last rites will be confirmed later, Emdadul said.
Jatin was the president of the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi central committee for two terms.
Jatin Sarker was born on 18 August 1936 in Chandapara village, under Kendua Upazila of Netrokona in the then British India. He got married in 1965. He has one son named Suman Sarker and a daughter named Sudipta Sarkar.
Jatin is a member of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB)’s Committees of Concerned Citizens of Bangladesh.
He was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2008 for research and essays and Independence Day Award in 2010 for education. Jatin has published 35 books.
