The Bangladesh Republic Party has said that holding an election neglecting justice and minimum reforms would be a betrayal of the July Uprising and the spirit it represents.

The party’s Organising Secretary, Ayatullah Hasanat Behesti, made the remark during a press conference held at the National Press Club on Sunday. The event was organised in light of the recent July Uprising that led to a transition in governance.

Behesti said, “This is not a caretaker government. It was formed based on the hopes of the people, and it is the government’s responsibility to fulfill those hopes.”

He further stated that the interim government must initiate reforms and ensure justice for the killings that occurred during July and August before proceeding to any election.

“The government has failed to embody the spirit of July and August. Any election without addressing these foundational issues will only be a continuation of betrayal,” he said.

In response to a question from journalists regarding whether the party would consider forming alliances with BNP or Jamaat-e-Islami, Behesti replied, “At this moment, our sole focus is on implementing the agenda shaped around the July Uprising.”

Earlier in the press conference, leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Republic Party unveiled 18 programmes to be carried out in July.

The party also raised four major demands to the interim government: ensuring structural reforms, initiating justice for July-August killings, formalising the July Charter, and redesigning the election framework.
