The Election Commission (EC) will seek an appointment with Acting Speaker Kayser Kamal to discuss the announcement of the presidential election schedule, Senior Secretary Md Akhtar Ahmed said on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters at Election Bhaban, the senior secretary confirmed that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin is scheduled to hold a courtesy meeting with Kamal.
According to established rules, the CEC meets with the speaker prior to the formal announcement of the presidential election schedule.
Earlier on Sunday, the CEC, along with other election commissioners and the senior secretary, held an informal meeting at the CEC’s office.
During the session, they reviewed laws pertaining to the presidential election and decided to meet the acting speaker to determine the subsequent steps for the schedule announcement.
As per regulations, the president is elected by the votes of the members of Parliament (MPs). To facilitate this, the Parliament Secretariat must send the list of names of the MPs to the EC Secretariat.
The EC will then prepare the voter list for the presidential election based on that information.
The election schedule will be officially announced once the voter list is prepared. The CEC’s upcoming meeting with the acting speaker will cover these procedural matters.
