Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) removed 2.47 lakh illegal banners, festoons and posters from across the city in November as part of an intensified drive to curb visual pollution.
The figures were disclosed on Thursday after a divisional review meeting on the month-long removal campaign, held at Nagar Bhaban and chaired by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz.
According to DNCC, the operation covered 52 wards under 10 regions, with Region 3 recording the highest removal count at 65,150. Nearly 47,000 were cleared from Region 5, 37,000 from Region 2 and 33,000 from Region 7.
Speaking to reporters, Administrator Ejaz said the corporation primarily targeted major roads, highways and key public areas, noting that the volume of illegal materials inside neighbourhood lanes was “significantly higher.”
He said 28 percent of the removed banners and festoons were political, 21 percent belonged to commercial establishments and 17 percent to educational institutions.
“We hope no one will continue to pollute the city in this manner,” he said. “Creating such disorder does not bring positive change. Residents are not willing to tolerate this level of visual pollution.”
Ejaz urged political figures and business owners to refrain from unauthorised advertising and to instruct their supporters and associates to do the same, emphasising the need to build a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing Dhaka.
DNCC officials said the clean-up drive would continue in the coming months as part of ongoing efforts to improve the city’s environment.
