Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Gulshan Society on Friday inaugurated a month-long joint initiative aimed at increasing citizen awareness and preventing the spread of dengue. The campaign was officially launched during a ceremony held at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan on Friday.
Organisers said as part of the month-long programme, awareness campaigns will be conducted across educational institutions, mosques, residential neighbourhoods, and slum areas. Additionally, the initiative involves the distribution of banners, posters, and leaflets to reach all levels of the community.
Speaking as the chairperson of the inaugural event, President of Gulshan Society, Barrister Omar Sadat, expressed grave concern over the death of 2,700 people from dengue over the last three years, describing the figure as “alarming and frustrating”.
“Mosquitoes exist everywhere in the world, but nowhere else do so many people die from mosquito bites as in our country”, Sadat said. He attributed the high mortality rate to a lack of awareness and a sense of irresponsibility, saying such deaths could be avoided through collective responsibility.
He added that mosquito control and dengue prevention are not tasks limited to a specific period, announcing that Gulshan Society will continue its prevention activities throughout the year.
The ceremony was attended by Gulshan Society Secretary General Mujibur Rahman Mridha, Vice President Abdul Mazed, and various DNCC officials, alongside local residents from all walks of life.
