Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) conducted an eviction drive at the Karwan Bazar Metro Station and its surrounding areas on Sunday, to reclaim public space and ensure the security of the metro rail infrastructure.
The operation, led by DMTCL Executive Magistrate Md Shajahan Ali, commenced at 11am and concluded at 12:50pm.
The primary objective of the drive was to remove illegal encroachments, floating shops, van depots, unauthorised structures, and illegal parking to facilitate the smooth movement of passengers and safeguard the metro rail’s physical assets.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) provided logistical support for the operation. Members of the MRT Police, Tejgaon Police Station, and the Bangladesh Ansar were present to maintain law and order throughout the proceedings.
The drive focused on the areas surrounding Gates A, B, C, and D of the station. Coordinated efforts were specifically directed at removing all unauthorised structures built on the footpaths and beneath the stairs between Gates A and B.
Simultaneously, illegal parking was cleared to restore the footpaths for public use.
During the enforcement action, various items including freight vans, equipment from mobile shops, and different types of merchandise were seized. Authorities also removed vans that had been found chained to the metro rail pillars and railings.
Following the operation, the ground level of the Karwan Bazar Metro Station was successfully cleared of illegal occupations, and footpaths were restored for the regular movement of commuters.
Officials noted that the drive was conducted as part of DMTCL’s regular activities and confirmed that such enforcement measures will continue in the future.
