The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a ban on all forms of public gatherings in and around Bangladesh Secretariat area amid mounting tension surrounding the administrative heart of the government.
The move follows a wave of mysterious posters across the capital demanding the removal of 44 top government officials.
The posters, seen in key areas including Topkhana Road, Segunbagicha, and near the Secretariat, were put up under the banner of a previously unknown organization named “July Moncho.” The posters call for the immediate removal of senior bureaucrats, raising concerns about their origin and intent.
Although the Secretariat staff movement is currently on hold due to Eid holidays, the atmosphere remains charged. In a public notice issued late Sunday night, DMP announced restrictions on gatherings near the Secretariat, the official residence of the Chief Advisor in Jamuna, and surrounding areas.
The notification, signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali on June 4 but published on June 8, states: “In the interest of public order and for the safety of the Hon’ble Chief Advisor, all kinds of gatherings, rallies, processions, and public assemblies are prohibited from June 9, 2025, until further notice in and around the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Chief Advisor’s official residence Jamuna, and adjacent areas (Hotel Intercontinental junction, Kakrail Mosque junction, Officers’ Club junction, Mintu Road), under the authority granted by Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance (Ordinance No. III/76).”
