Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Thursday dismissed Transparency International Bangladesh’s (TIB) findings that crime has increased in the capital, saying police records do not support the report.
Speaking to reporters after visiting Shahbagh Police Station, the commissioner said his assessment over the past two months since taking office indicates that the overall law and order situation in Dhaka has remained stable.
“The statistics in TIB’s report do not match the data maintained by the police,” he said, without elaborating on the discrepancies.
To curb crime, police presence has been increased in identified crime-prone areas across the capital, the commissioner said.
Alongside uniformed officers, plainclothes personnel are conducting 24-hour patrols and surveillance, which he said has helped reduce incidents of theft, mugging and other street crimes.
The DMP has also introduced measures to improve the mental well-being of its personnel and ease workplace stress, he said.
Responding to a question about recent incidents of suicide among police members, the commissioner urged officers experiencing psychological distress or personal difficulties to seek support through their superior officers so that appropriate assistance can be provided.
He also said the DMP has prioritised the modernisation of officers’ facilities and police barracks at police stations across the capital to improve working and living conditions for its personnel.
