Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has introduced a new BRTC double-decker bus service for its doctors, nurses, and employees, a move hospital authorities believe will improve the standard of healthcare services.
The staff bus service was officially inaugurated on Tuesday afternoon at the hospital’s administrative block by Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Chairman (Additional Secretary) Abdul Latif Mollah and Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman.
Morjina Akhter, a senior staff nurse and member of the staff bus service management committee, said that three BRTC double-decker buses have been deployed for the service. Each of these buses will regularly transport 75 passengers.
Initially, the shuttle buses will operate on two routes: the first runs from Dhaka Medical to Chittagong Road, and the second from Dhaka Medical to the Rampura-Badda-Kuril road. The service will bring passengers to the hospital in the morning and return them along those routes in the afternoon. There are plans to expand the service area in the future.
Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman noted that hospital staff previously relied on public transport and auto-rickshaws to commute to work, which often resulted in them being unable to reach their shifts on time.
He explained that these delays ultimately had an adverse impact on patient care. “Considering those issues, this arrangement has been made for healthcare providers,” he said.
He added that while the service currently covers two routes, both the number of buses and the routes will be expanded if passenger numbers increase. He expressed hope that the initiative will support the staff in their work and further elevate the overall quality of healthcare services.
