Lionel Messi’s former Argentina team-mates have paid emotional tribute to their captain after the legendary forward confirmed the end of his international career. Messi announced on Monday that he would no longer represent Argentina, bringing an extraordinary 21-year international career to a close. The 39-year-old made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals for his country.
Although he will continue playing for Inter Miami, Messi leaves the international stage as a World Cup winner and one of the most decorated footballers in history. He led Argentina to glory at the 2022 World Cup and captained them to another final at this year’s tournament.
Messi is also the second-highest men’s international goalscorer of all time, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo. Former Argentina winger Angel Di Maria, who played alongside Messi during their World Cup triumph, described the retirement as difficult to accept.
“It’s so hard to read that you’re retiring,” Di Maria said. “We won’t be seeing you wearing the sky blue and white colours anymore. I was born in the right century to witness you play, enjoy your performances and share so many years with you in the national team.
“To see you fulfil your dreams, especially the greatest of them all, becoming world champion, was incredible. Thank you for everything. You are a legend and the greatest of all time.”
Rodrigo De Paul also thanked Messi for his leadership and influence on the national team, praising his determination and the way he supported those around him. “You are the greatest of all time,” De Paul said. “Thank you for making us so happy. You brought so many smiles to our faces. You are eternal.”
Enzo Fernandez admitted it would be difficult to imagine Argentina without Messi. “How lucky I was, Leo,” Fernandez said. “Thank you for everything you taught me and for allowing me to be part of your story. We are going to miss you so much, captain.”
Messi made his Argentina debut in 2005 as an 18-year-old and initially retired from international football in 2016 after losing three consecutive finals. He later returned and helped end the nation’s long wait for major silverware.
Argentina FA president Claudio Tapia said Messi had become an enduring symbol of the national team. “You are already a legend of Argentina, our national team and world football,” Tapia said. “You made us believe in magic. The Argentina shirt is your flag, and our people’s love for you will last forever.”
