The interim government is poised to introduce significant changes to Dhaka’s public transportation system, bringing all buses in the capital under a unified framework, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
A statement posted on the Chief Adviser’s verified Facebook account on Tuesday night revealed that Dhaka’s bus services have long been operating without proper regulation.
As a result, commuters face daily challenges, including traffic congestion, accidents, fare scams, and a host of other inconveniences. While young and physically able passengers may manage to board buses, the situation is far more difficult for women, children, and the elderly.
The statement also pointed out that unregulated bus routes are a major contributor to Dhaka’s traffic woes. This chaos leads to an annual economic loss of approximately Tk 37,000 crore, with an estimated 3.2 million work hours lost every day.
According to the press wing, under the new system, all bus companies will be required to follow specific routes and bus stops. This will restore order, reduce fare manipulation, and enhance passenger service.
The government expects the initiative to make public transportation safer and more comfortable, ensuring passengers no longer need to struggle to board buses or face fare-related issues. For millions of city residents, bus travel will become smoother, faster, and more dependable.
