Sheikh Mohammad Maroof has stepped down from his role as managing director of Dhaka Bank, submitting his resignation letter on 14 August to the bank’s chairman Abdul Hai Sarkar.
Speaking to TIMES of Bangladesh on Sunday, Maroof said his resignation was purely for personal reasons. “I want to spend some time on my own for a while. At this moment, I am not even joining any bank,” he added.
His departure in less than a year into the post has, however, sparked speculation across the banking sector.
Dhaka Bank Chairman Abdul Hai Sarkar confirmed Maroof’s resignation, noting that while it was on personal ground, the MD had failed to comply with several Bangladesh Bank regulations after assuming his responsibilities. “I have received his resignation letter. A decision on this matter will be taken at the bank’s board meeting tomorrow (Monday),” he said.
Sheikh Mohammad Maroof joined Dhaka Bank as managing director in October 2024, having previously served as additional managing director at City Bank.
