A Jhenaidah tribunal on Monday sentenced a man to death for raping and killing a five-year-old girl in Kaliganj upazila in February this year.
The convict is Abu Taher, son of Shafi Uddin of Faraspur village in the upazila.
Judge Salehuzzaman of the Jhenaidah Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment for concealing the body after the murder and fined him Tk5 lakh.
The court ordered that the fine be paid to the victim’s legal heirs. It said the amount will be recovered through auction of the convict’s property if he fails to pay.
According to the prosecution, Tabassum, daughter of Nazrul Islam of Bhoiraba village in Maheshpur upazila, lived with her family at Badedihi village in Barobazar area of Kaliganj.
On 26 February, neighbour Abu Taher lured the child to his house by offering chips and juice.
He raped and strangled her to death and later dumped the body in the septic tank of a local school.
Police recovered the body the following day.
Police arrested Abu Taher from Kushtia on the same night after a case was filed. He later gave a confessional statement before the court.
Police submitted the charge sheet on 26 May. Seventeen witnesses testified before the court delivered the verdict.
