British actor David Jonsson has officially been cast as the new Black Panther, taking on the role of Prince T’Challa II in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther 3, which is scheduled to hit cinemas on 15 December 2028, states Variety.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
Jonsson will portray the grown-up son of King T’Challa and Nakia, a character first introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
The third instalment will follow Prince T’Challa II as he comes of age and embraces his destiny as Wakanda’s next protector.
Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler will return to direct the sequel, while Letitia Wright reprises her role as Shuri and Winston Duke returns as M’Baku.
Following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer, Marvel chose not to recast T’Challa.
Instead, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever saw Shuri inherit the mantle of the Black Panther while introducing T’Challa’s young son as the future of Wakanda.
Jonsson has emerged as one of Britain’s fastest-rising stars, earning acclaim for his performances in Alien: Romulus and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk.
The original Black Panther (2018) became a global phenomenon, earning more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and becoming the first superhero film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
It went on to win three Oscars, including Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
Its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, grossed $859 million worldwide and received five Academy Award nominations.
Actress Angela Bassett made history by becoming the first performer in a Marvel film to earn an Oscar acting nomination.
Before returning in Black Panther 3, Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri in Marvel’s upcoming ensemble film Avengers: Doomsday, which is set for release later this year.
The casting of Jonsson signals the beginning of a new chapter for one of Marvel’s most celebrated franchises, as the legacy of Wakanda continues with a new generation of heroes.
