A local leader of Jubo League in Satkania upazila of Chattogram died in the district central jail on Wednesday, a day after being arrested by police.
Alam, 45, was the Joint Convenor of the Dhemsa Union Jubo League and the son of Ebas Hossain.
The deceased had been arrested by the District Detective Police (DB) on Tuesday afternoon on charges of planning sabotage. Following his arrest, he was produced before a court, which ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to Jail Superintendent Iqbal Hossain, the incident occurred during the registration of prisoners’ details on Wednesday morning. Alam complained of acute chest pain and was immediately moved to the prison hospital. However, the duty doctor declared him “brought dead” at approximately 7:30am.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Satkania Circle) Md. Ariful Islam Siddiqui provided further details regarding the legal proceedings. He stated that the DB handed Alam over to the local police station at 12:15pm on Tuesday. Alam was facing charges under various sections of the Penal Code and the Explosives Act.
“We sent him to court at 2:40 pm after completing the necessary legal formalities,” the Additional SP said, noting that Alam was in police custody for only about two and a half hours. He clarified that the death occurred within the prison facility and not while in police custody.
While a formal autopsy report is awaited to confirm the exact cause of death, prison medical sources preliminary suggest that Alam may have suffered a stroke or heart attack. Police confirmed that the deceased was named in multiple cases involving sabotage and explosive substances.
Although police were already acquainted with members of the deceased’s family, including his brother Nur Mohammad, no fresh statement has been received from the family following the incident.
