A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the freezing of 27 bank accounts belonging to former Naogaon-3 (Mahadevpur-Badalgachhi) lawmaker Md Salim Uddin Tarafder and his wife Shamima Akhter Shirin, containing a total of Tk55.92 lakh.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir issued the order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC assistant director Afnan Jannat Keya submitted the application seeking to freeze the accounts.
According to the application, Shamima Akhter Shirin, 56, allegedly acquired and possessed assets worth Tk1.69 crore beyond her known sources of income in collusion with her husband, Md Salim Uddin Tarafder, 57.
The application alleged that the couple abused their power and influence, along with financial assistance provided with dishonest intent, while discharging official duties.
The alleged offences are punishable under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code.
The ACC also informed the court that the couple were attempting to transfer or dispose of their movable assets, including funds held in their bank accounts.
The commission argued that transferring the assets before the case was disposed of could jeopardise the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings, making it necessary to freeze the accounts.
