A college student was killed in a motorcycle accident in Faridpur town after attempting to overtake a soil-laden brick kiln lorry on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Upasana Ghosh, 22, daughter of Uttam Ghosh of the ciapital’s Jhiltuli area. She was a first-semester student in the Civil Engineering department at Faridpur Polytechnic Institute.
The incident occurred at approximately 12pm in front of the Institute of Marine Technology in the Baitul Aman area.
Police and witnesses said Upasana and a man named Akash, 28, were returning to the city after refilling fuel at a pump in the Tepakhola area. The motorcycle reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake a lorry carrying soil for a brick kiln and struck the vehicle from behind.
Both riders were thrown from the bike and sustained critical injuries. Locals rescued them and rushed them to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced Upasana dead. Akash is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital for his injuries.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that police have detained the lorry’s helper, 19-year-old Hossain Molla.
However, the driver managed to flee the scene and could not be apprehended.
Police have seized the lorry and the damaged motorcycle, and the process for taking legal action is currently underway.
