The central bank has imposed temporary limits on cash and mobile financial service transactions ahead of the upcoming national election, restricting daily bank cash transactions to Tk1 lakh and MFS transactions to Tk10,000.
Under the directive, no customer will be able to carry out MFS transactions exceeding Tk10,000 per day from February 8 until midnight on 12 February, the day of voting.
In a separate internal instruction, banks have been told that daily cash transactions per customer must not exceed Tk1 lakh.
The instructions were issued to commercial banks on Sunday.
Bangladesh Bank said the measures were taken to ensure financial security during the election period.
Arief Hossain Khan, spokesperson and executive director of Bangladesh Bank, told TIMES, “A customer can carry out up to 10 transactions a day within a total limit of Tk10,000 for sending and withdrawing money. Each transaction cannot exceed Tk1,000.”
