Derbyshire Police have opened an investigation into assault allegations following an incident involving England fast bowler Brydon Carse outside a nightclub in Derby.
Carse was handcuffed by police outside a late night bar over the weekend. Officers initially arrested the Durham pacer on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
Police later released Carse after he agreed to leave the area.
The Cricket Regulator has also started an investigation into the incident. England have since left Carse out of their squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, which starts on Thursday.
Derbyshire Police confirmed on Wednesday that they were now investigating separate assault allegations.
“We are investigating allegations of assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing,” police said.
Police have not given further details about the alleged assault. It also remains unclear whether Carse had any involvement in it.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has not publicly commented on the latest police investigation.
A video from the incident appeared to show Carse being detained by officers in the street.
Police initially said they had arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night.
However, officers released the man soon afterwards after he agreed to leave the area.
Former England captain Ben Stokes and Durham teammate Matthew Potts also appeared in footage from the scene.
The incident happened after Durham’s County Championship win over Derbyshire. There is no suggestion that Stokes or Potts did anything wrong.
England Test captain Joe Root expressed his frustration over the incident on Tuesday.
“If I’m being brutally honest I’m really hacked off,” Root said.
Root said he had spoken to Carse after learning about what happened.
“I’ve spoken to Brydon and when I first found out my first concern was him as a person. I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn in saying he’s very upset, very apologetic and understands his actions,” Root said.
However, Root said his frustration went beyond one incident.
“But it’s not the isolated incident itself, it’s the fact we continuously keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it’s detracting from what we are doing on the field,” he said.
The latest episode adds to concerns around England players following several alcohol related incidents away from cricket.
Carse will now remain out of England’s squad as the Cricket Regulator conducts its investigation, while Derbyshire Police continue their separate probe into the assault allegations.
