Bangladesh women’s head coach Peter Butler has doubled down on his commitment to player development as he insisted that the SAFF Under-19 Championship is not about lifting the trophy. Rather it is about finding players who can survive, and thrive, beyond it.
“Becoming champions in this tournament is not our main aim,” the Bangladesh women’s head coach said at the pre-tournament press conference in Pokhara. “Through this competition, I am looking for players for the senior national team and the AFC Under-20 team, players who can perform on the big stage in the future.”
Those remarks frame Butler’s controversial presence in Nepal at a time when Bangladesh’s senior women’s team has already begun preparations in Dhaka for the Women’s Asia Cup, to be held in Australia in March. His absence from that camp has drawn criticism within the football community, with questions raised over priorities and timing. It is still unclear whether Butler travelled to Nepal on the instruction of the Bangladesh Football Federation or on his own initiative.
Butler’s explanation is consistent with the philosophy he says he has followed since taking charge nearly two years ago. Short-term success, in his view, is secondary to building a pipeline of players capable of stepping up to higher international levels.
“For almost two years now, what I have been trying to do is develop Bangladeshi football,” he said. “This is one of the stages and pathways of that development.”
The SAFF Under-19 Championship, featuring Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and hosts Nepal, offers Butler a concentrated environment to assess young players under competitive pressure. Rather than focusing solely on results, he is using the tournament to judge who might be ready for senior international football or future AFC Under-20 competition.
Inside the camp, however, ambitions remain more conventional. Bangladesh Under-19 captain Arpita Biswas has spoken of taking the tournament match by match with the aim of reaching the final.
Bangladesh begin their campaign against Bhutan on Saturday. Each team will play three matches, with the top two progressing to the final on 7 February.
