The British Council has been recognised by UNESCO as a member of the Global Education Coalition and the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030, expanding its role in international efforts to improve education quality and teacher development.
The Global Education Coalition was launched in 2020 to address learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and now focuses on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning.
The initiative brings together more than 200 partners including governments, multilateral organisations, civil society groups and private sector institutions working to transform education systems.
Through the membership, the British Council will contribute experience in teacher training, English language education and inclusive learning to help countries build more resilient education systems.
The organisation has also joined the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030, a global alliance working to address shortages of qualified teachers and strengthen support for educators worldwide.
The British Council said its more than 90 years of experience in teacher development and professional training will support the task force’s work, particularly in fragile, multilingual and resource-constrained contexts.
British Council Country Director Bangladesh Stephen Forbes said Bangladesh has expanded access to education but improving quality and equity remains a national priority.
“The British Council’s membership in UNESCO’s global education initiatives strengthens our ability to connect local expertise with international partnerships,” he said.
The organisation works with ministries of education, schools, universities and civil society groups on programmes including teacher training, digital learning and English language education in conflict-affected regions.
Officials said participation in the two initiatives will expand opportunities for collaboration, evidence-based programmes and international learning networks to strengthen education systems.
