Body of Bibhuranjan Sarkar recovered from Meghna River

The body of missing journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar was discovered floating in the Meghna River near the Kalagachia area of Munshiganj.

Inspector Saleh Ahmed Pathan, in charge of the Kalagachia River Police Outpost, confirmed that the body was recovered on Friday evening. He added that the photograph sent with the missing person report from the Ramna Police Station matched the image of the deceased, prompting the police to inform the Ramna authorities.

Meanwhile, Bibhuranjan’s son, Rito Sarkar, and his brother, Chiranjan Sarkar has confirmed that the body recovered from Meghna River is in fact of this missing journalist. They identified Bibhuranjan’s body at the Munshiganj General Hospital morgue around 8:45pm on Friday.

Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division, stated further investigation will be launched over the death of Bibhuranjan.

The veteran journalist went missing on Thursday. His family filed a General Diary (GD) at the Ramna Police Station on the same night.

Upon inquiring at the newspaper office, it was discovered that he had not attended work that day. His mobile phone was also unreachable, and despite searching various places, his family was unable to locate him.

Earlier on the same day, at 9:15 a.m., Sarkar sent an open letter to online news portal bdnews24.com via email, where he reflected on the highs and lows of his journalistic career and the pressures of the profession. The letter included a footnote stating, “You may publish this as my final writing.”

The open letter was published on bdnews24.com at 5:23 pm on Friday.

Duty officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Kader at Ramna Police Station confirmed the GD and stated that the investigation into the disappearance of the journalist is ongoing.

Bibhuranjan Sarkar resides in the Siddheswari area in Dhaka with his wife, son, and daughter. Authorities are actively looking into his whereabouts.
