Abdul Hai (45), a member of Dubpara Ward BNP, was killed in a cocktail bomb attack in Dubpara area of Benapole, Jashore, on Eid night.
The incident occurred at around 9pm on Saturday at Dubpara Bazar in Bahadurpur Union. Three other BNP activists were also injured in the attack.
Police and eyewitnesses reported that earlier on Eid morning, an argument broke out between BNP leader Abdul Hai, the ward president, and activist Saeed over the presence of several local Awami League members at the Eidgah prayer ground. Although a mediation was planned, the attack took place before any resolution could be reached.
While returning home from the market at night, Abdul Hai and his associates were traveling in a van when six to seven assailants on motorcycles hurled six cocktails at them. Abdul Hai succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The victim’s wife alleged, “My husband was not involved in any crime. He was murdered in a planned manner. I demand justice and a fair investigation.”
Tension has gripped Dubpara following the incident. Additional police forces have been deployed to control the situation, said SI Mamun Sheikh of Benapole Port Police Station. “An investigation is underway, and a murder case has been initiated,” he added.
The incident has sparked concern among locals, who are demanding the immediate arrest and trial of the perpetrators.
