Australia have decided that winning in Bangladesh does not require their holy trinity of pace. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will all miss next month’s white-ball tour, as Cricket Australia named separate ODI and T20I squads for Pakistan and Bangladesh without the trio who have carried their attack for the best part of a decade.
Mitchell Marsh will captain all three squads. Australia will play three ODIs against Pakistan in Rawalpindi and Lahore before travelling to Bangladesh for three ODIs in Dhaka and three T20 internationals in Chattogram.
Victoria batter Ollie Peake joined the ODI squad for Pakistan after impressing selectors during his stint as a development player with the Test side in Sri Lanka last year. South Australia all-rounder Liam Scott also earned his first Australia selection after winning Sheffield Shield Player of the Year honours.
Sydney Sixers all-rounder Joel Davies secured a maiden T20 call-up for the Bangladesh series after claiming the Andrew Symonds Award as the Big Bash League’s most valuable player last season.
Billy Stanlake and Riley Meredith returned for the Pakistan ODIs, while spinner Tanveer Sangha kept his place in both ODI squads. Meredith will also feature in the Bangladesh T20 series.
Australia will strengthen their Bangladesh ODI squad with the arrivals of Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett after the Pakistan leg ends. The quartet currently feature in the Indian Premier League.
Selectors left out Matt Short, while Peake, Stanlake and Meredith will not travel to Bangladesh for the ODI series.
Chair of selectors George Bailey said Australia wanted to build depth ahead of future ICC events.
“It’s always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be a part of the national team.
“The blend of experienced players coupled with new or returning players will provide a nice mix for these subcontinent tours.
“Continuing to provide opportunities for players to develop across a broad range of conditions and experiences is important and will continue to be a focus over the next 18 months to two years across the calendar and with future campaigns in mind.”
