Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) has called for stronger investment, capacity building, and regulatory guidance to accelerate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cyber security across the banking sector.

The call came during a roundtable discussion held at the BIBM auditorium in Dhaka, where the institute presented a new survey showing that most banks remain at a preliminary stage in adopting AI-based security systems.

BIBM Professor Md Shihab Uddin Khan presented the study, while BIBM Executive Committee Chair and Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar attended as chief guest.

The survey found that around 70 percent of banks have yet to deploy AI-driven cyber security mechanisms — 46 percent have no automation at all, while 24 percent are still in the planning phase. Only 27 percent have achieved partial automation, limited to routine or repetitive tasks, and just 3 percent have fully automated AI systems in place.

BIBM said the findings highlight the urgent need for policy guidance and technical readiness to move from planning to practical deployment, ensuring that banks can strengthen digital resilience against emerging cyber threats.
