Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered a foreign-made pistol, its magazine, and a bullet in a special operation in Lalmonirhat as part of increased vigilance along the border ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.
A special patrol team of the Lalmonirhat Battalion (15 BGB) carried out the operation in the Muniarchar Folimari area near the Mogolhat border outpost (BOP) at around 3am on Wednesday.
Sources from BGB said that based on a tip-off about possible illegal arms smuggling across the border, the 15 BGB team conducted the special operation, during which they recovered an abandoned US-made foreign pistol wrapped in polythene, one magazine, and one single bullet.
In a press release, BGB stated that, centring the upcoming National Parliamentary Election, intelligence activities and surveillance have been increased severalfold under the BGB Director General to maintain the normal law and order situation in the country.
On election day, a total of 19 platoons of mobile and striking forces in 5 upazilas under 3 parliamentary constituencies within the jurisdiction of the Lalmonirhat Battalion are expected to be deployed. The recovered firearm and bullet were being processed for further legal action, the release went on to add.
Regarding this matter, the commander of 15 BGB, Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, said, additional caution and activities are being maintained at the border to prevent any illegal infiltration, drug, or arms smuggling that could disrupt the election process. Along with strengthening security measures in the border area, regular patrols and intelligence activities are continuing.
