Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga title for a 35th time on Sunday, coming from behind to beat Stuttgart 4–1 at the Allianz Arena in a night of celebration tinged with early nerves.
The result was almost a formality before kick-off, with nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund having fallen to defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday evening, leaving Bayern needing just a point to be crowned champions. In the end, they did it in far more emphatic fashion.
The hosts were far from handed an easy evening. Stuttgart, battling for a Champions League place next season, took the game to Bayern from the first whistle and were rewarded when Chris Fuhrich curled a superb effort into the net after 21 minutes to give the visitors a shock lead.
The Allianz Arena was silenced momentarily, but Bayern’s response was swift and decisive. Raphael Guerreiro levelled ten minutes later, and two minutes after that Nicolas Jackson, the Chelsea loanee deputising for the injured Harry Kane, put the hosts ahead with a composed finish. The turnaround had taken just twelve minutes.
Any lingering doubt was extinguished before the break. Alphonso Davies added a third nine minutes before half-time, improvising brilliantly to flick the ball past Alexander Nübel from inside the area after a well-weighted pass from Luis Díaz.
Kane, who had been left out of the starting lineup, came on to replace Jamal Musiala at the interval and needed just seven minutes to make his mark. His finish — his 32nd Bundesliga goal of the season — all but wrapped up both the match and the title. Chema Andrés pulled one back for Stuttgart in the 88th minute, but by then the celebrations were already well under way.
The victory marks Bayern’s 13th Bundesliga title in the past 14 seasons, a streak of domestic dominance that has few parallels in European football. Yet there is a sense at the Allianz Arena that this squad is hungry for more.
The treble remains firmly in their sights. Semi-finals against Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League are both scheduled for later this month, and with a squad of this quality firing on all cylinders, few would bet against them.
