Nearly ten years after the incident, a Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of a grocery shopkeeper during a mugging in 2016 at Siddique Bazar in the capital’s Bangshal.
Judge Sadekin Habib Bappi of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge‑6 delivered the verdict on Wednesday in presence of the convict, Masum Mia alias Kalu.
The court also acquitted another accused, Yunus Mia, as charges against him were not proven. Yunus was also present in the court, said the court’s Bench Assistant Md Abul Kashem.
State prosecutor Habibur Rahman appeared for the prosecution, while no defense lawyer was present.
According to case records, on 10 September 2016 Abdul Quddus set out from Kamrangirchar by rickshaw in the early morning to return home via Fulbaria bus terminal.
In Bangshal, two muggers blocked Abdul’s rickshaw, demanded his belongings, and after taking cash and other items, stabbed him in the chest.
When he was taken to the hospital, he was declared dead. That morning, his cousin Md Kamal Hossain filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station.
Two months later, on 10 November, Bangshal Police Station Sub‑inspector Md Shahidul Islam submitted a charge sheet against the two accused.
On 7 March 2017, the court framed charges and began trial. The prosecution examined 15 witnesses out of a total of 18 listed.
