Chief Adviser of the interim government Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus highlighted the glorious participation of Bangladesh Scouts in the July uprising as a source of national and global pride.
Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the Cub Carnival and Shapla Cub Award distribution ceremony at Shapla Hall of the chief adviser’s Office in Tejgaon on Monday, Yunus stated, “This is not just a matter of pride for Bangladesh, but for Scouts worldwide. Scout members sacrificed their lives for the country and its people – a sacrifice that contributed to creating a new Bangladesh. There is no parallel to this in the history of world scouting.”
Recalling his personal scouting journey, Yunus shared his 1955 experience at the Global Scout Jamboree in Canada. “From my childhood, scouting became my ideological attire. My journey began in sixth grade and never stopped. Through scouting, I got opportunities to visit Canada, Europe, and many other countries, learning about different cultures,” he reflected.
Yunus emphasised how scouting’s practical and creative aspects fascinated him. “The chance to innovate and compete always brought me joy,” he said, while advocating for incorporating global exposure opportunities in modern scouting programs.
“Current scouting should include chances to see the world, understand foreign cultures, and learn new languages – helping the youth discover themselves while building international friendships.”
Addressing young scouts, he advised: “Your responsibility is to open doors for others. Having come this far, you must take this duty seriously.”
During the event, the chief adviser presented Gallantry Awards to families of eight scout members martyred in the July uprising and distributed Shapla Cub Awards to competition winners. The nationwide Cub Carnival commenced simultaneously at 527 locations across Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Scouts’ ad-hoc Committee Chairman Md Ehsanul Haque and Member Secretary Mir Mahbubur Rahman also spoke at the ceremony, paying tribute to the scouts who made history through their ultimate sacrifice.
