Bangladesh has been elected Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026.
The election to the five-member bureau was held on Thursday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
At the first meeting of the Commission’s 20th session, members elected Morocco as Chair, while Germany, Brazil, Croatia and Bangladesh were chosen as Vice-Chairs.
The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peace efforts in countries affected by conflict.
The Commission comprises 31 member states drawn from the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, alongside leading troop- and financial-contributing countries to the United Nations system.
Bangladesh has been a member of the Commission since its inception in 2005 and previously served as Chair in 2012, and as Vice-Chair in 2013 and 2023.
Bangladesh formally assumed its role as Vice-Chair during the first meeting of the 20th session, following a brief ceremony attended by the President of the UN General Assembly and the Chef de Cabinet, representing the Secretary-General, who delivered statements highlighting the role of the Commission.
In a statement, the Bangladesh delegation thanked Commission members for their trust and confidence and reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations’ peacebuilding efforts, outlining its priorities and plans of action for the term ahead.
