Rangpur police have arrested a leader of the banned Awami League in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The arrest was made around 11:45pm on Wednesday from the Hanumantala area of Rangpur metropolis, police said.
Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahjahan Ali said the arrestee, Nazmul Huda, 45, was identified during the investigation into the attempted murder of Ramzan Ali, who sustained gunshot injuries during the movement.
He said a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station accusing Nazmul of attacking protesters and opening fire during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The officer-in-charge said Nazmul serves as general secretary of Gojoghonta Union Awami League under Gangachara Upazila.
He said Nazmul, son of Jalal Abedin of Habu village in Gojoghonta Union, went into hiding after August 5 last year and had recently been staying in a rented house at Badsha Miah’s residence in Hanumantala.
Nazmul will be produced before the court on Thursday, the officer-in-charge said.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali said combing operations are underway across the city.
He said all accused in cases linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement would be brought under the law.
Those attempting to destabilise the situation ahead of the election would also face legal action, he added.
