The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought wealth statements of 17 National Board of Revenue (NBR) officials.
Confirming the matter on Tuesday, ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain said, “Following investigation, the commission has found evidence that the 17 NBR officials are hoarding illegal wealth.
“We have sent notices asking them to submit their illegal wealth.”
These officials are – NBR member Md Lutful Azim, member (Income Tax Policy) AKM Badiul Alam, former Additional Director General (CIC) Md Alamgir Hossain, Joint Commissioner Md Tariq Hasan, Additional Commissioner Sadhan Kumar Kundu, Customs Excise and VAT Commissionerate Commissioner Kazi Md Zia Uddin, Railway Customs Commissioner Md Kamruzzaman, and Additional Commissioner of VAT Commissionerate of Large Taxpayer Unit Abdur Rashid Mia.
The list also includes – Deputy Tax Commissioner of Tax Region 16 Mohammad Shihabul Islam, Additional Tax Commissioner of Tax Region 8 Mirza Ashiq Rana, Joint Tax Commissioner of BCS Tax Academy Mohammad Morshed Uddin Khan, Deputy Tax Commissioner of Tax Region 16 Monalisa Shahrin Sushmita, Additional Commissioner of Audit, Intelligence and Investigation Department (Value Added Tax) Hasan Tarek Rikabder, Additional Commissioner Mohammad Mamun Mia, Additional Commissioner of Intelligence Unit Sahela Siddique, Tax Appellate Tribunal Commissioner Lokman Ahmed and Tax Commissioner of Tax Region 3 MM Fazlul Haque.
ACC Director General Hossain said, “After reviewing information gathered by the commission, we found that these NBR officials have undisclosed assets under their own name, or people on their behalf.
“Under the circumstances, the commission has asked them submit information regarding their assets and liabilities.”
On June 29 this year, the ACC launched an investigation against six NBR officials. On July 1, the ACC announced that it would start an investigation against five more people, and then another five people on July 3.
The government has suspended and transferred several officials on charges of being involved in the NBR reform movement. Last Monday, the ACC suspended nine top NBR officials.
