Chapainawabganj transport workers enforced a strike for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding an increase in wages and allowances.
The strike has brought long-distance travel to a standstill as bus services on the Chapainawabganj–Rajshahi–Natore–Dhaka–Chattogram routes remain suspended. Passengers were left stranded, while the Bus Stand area appeared paralysed with counters open but no staff present.
Saidur Rahman, president of the Chapainawabganj District Truck, Tanker, and Covered Van Workers Union, said that uncertainty over negotiations with bus owners persisted until Monday.
However, through the mediation of the workers’ federation, a meeting has been arranged in Dhaka’s Gabtoli on Tuesday afternoon with labour leaders from Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, and Natore. He expressed hope that the discussions would lead to a solution.
Workers and staff from several transport companies, including Desh Travels, National Travels, Grameen Travels, Hanif, and KTC, launched the indefinite strike on Monday to press home their demand for higher wages and benefits.
