A case has been filed against 2,200 unnamed individuals for setting fire to a man’s home and a shrine in Homna upazila of Cumilla, following allegations of insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The police registered the case after the mob attack took place on Thursday, following a public announcement made via a loudspeaker.
Homna Police Station Sub-Inspector Tapas Kumar Sarker filed the case last night, stating that an investigation has already begun. He mentioned that further details will be provided once progress is made.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when a Facebook post allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) led to a public outcry. Following the incident, a group of people attacked the house of the accused, Mohsin, 35, and nearby shrines in Asadpur, setting them ablaze.
The police and army intervened to bring the situation under control.
The accused, Mohsin, is from Fakir Bari of Asadnagar village in Homna. The controversial post was allegedly shared on a Facebook ID called “Bemza Mohsin” at 11am on Wednesday, causing public uproar.
Protesters gathered in front of the police station, prompting the police to arrest Mohsin.
In the evening, Mohammad Shariful Islam, the organisational secretary of the Bangladesh Islami Jubo Sena, Homna branch, filed a case against Mohsin at Homna Police Station. Mohsin was arrested, and later sent to court on Thursday.
From Thursday morning, enraged locals, following the announcement on the loudspeakers, attacked Mohsin’s house and several shrines, including Kofil Uddin Shah, Howali Shah, Kalai Shah, and Abdu Shah, in Asadpur, causing extensive damage and setting fire to the sites.
Two fire units were dispatched to control the blaze.
